Modern Vehicles
Thanks to improved manufacturing, better engine materials and high-quality synthetic oils, many modern vehicles can now go much longer between oil changes.According to AAA, most automakers now recommend oil change intervals between 5,000 and 7,500 miles for vehicles using conventional oil. If your car requires full-synthetic motor oil, that range extends to 10,000 to 15,000 miles.
While modern engines can go longer between oil changes, some driving conditions may still require more frequent maintenance. Car and Driver notes that "severe service" conditions include:
- Frequent short trips (under five miles in normal temperatures or under 10 miles in freezing temperatures)
- Stop-and-go traffic in extreme heat
- Driving on dusty, muddy or gravel roads
- Towing heavy loads or driving at low speeds for extended distances
- Track driving or off-roading
