What type of insurance rates is everyone getting in Ontario?

I BC, you are required to uy the basic Liability insurance through ICBC, however, there are options for collision, theft and comprehensive(vandalism, mishap, not while driving, and glass coverage) . Some options are good, however, there are companies like Belair, that require you to use their app......it uses the gyroscope in your phone to sense hard acceleration, sudden stops, as well as GPS(ie Google Maps) functions to sense how fast you are going. If it sees you are frequently speeding, or braking/accelerating hard, your responsibility will go up. You agree to this when you purchase these policies. My normal commute ho.e from work on HWY 1 - you will go over the limit(90kms/hr) several times just going the flow of traffic.

What starts out to be a cheaper policy can quickly increase......no thanks, happy to pay a fixed rate, amd not be monitored that closely by big brother!!!

Yeah I’m a bit stuck this year to be honest. I got a stunt driving and suspension this past year on 2024. Although my insurance doesn’t reflect any of that and it shows clean on the renewal, I really don’t think shopping around until March 2027 will make sense but I am going to try. My record was clean for 12+ years. Just bad timing. New job downtown and had to get to the kids to pick them up and dinner. Pushed it a bit and got busted. 🥹

I love this one.
  • Driving on a bet or wager
How the heck would you prove that one?
I bet you couldn't drive all the way home with 2 hands.

Stunt driving can also include:
  • driving with a person in the trunk of the motor vehicle.
  • driving while the driver is not sitting in the driver’s seat.
  • driving to prevent another vehicle from passing,
  • spinning a vehicle or cause it to circle, without maintaining control over it.
  • cause some or all of its tires to lose traction with the surface of the highway while turning.
  • driving that indicates an intention to drive, without justification, as close as possible to another vehicle, pedestrian or fixed object on or near the highway.
  • lift some or all of its tires from the surface of the highway, including driving a motorcycle with only one wheel in contact with the ground.
  • driving two or more motor vehicles side by side or in proximity to each other, where one of the motor vehicles occupies a lane of traffic or other portion of the highway intended for use by oncoming traffic for a period of time that is longer than is reasonably required to pass another motor vehicle.
  • stopping or slowing down in a manner that indicates the driver’s sole intention in stopping or slowing down is to interfere with the movement of another vehicle by cutting off its passage on the highway or to cause another vehicle to stop or slow down in circumstances where the other vehicle would not ordinarily do so.

I did all of these when I rolled the car. I was only charged with careless. lol.
I landed upside down so none of my wheels were on the surface of the highway.

I would like to set the record straight so nobody loses their license from something they read.

Section 3-7.1 Driving a motor vehicle at a rate of speed that is 150 kilometres per hour or more.

Indeed 160kmh in a 110kmh would do it with a little icing on the cake, but in 110kmh zones in Ontario you only have 39kmh (149kmh total) leeway until your car is going to the pound.

Ah . That explains a lot. Doesn’t explain why you aren’t putting more miles on it though although I know you young guys have a lot on the go with kids , work and dishes , lol.

I see a lot of these infractions almost on a daily basis and there’s a foot of snow on the road…….except maybe the 150 k .

I am 53, no tickets and live in rural Ontario. I paid $900 last year for my C8 with $2M liability and a $5000 deduct with CAA insurance.
Get ready.... my renewal just doubled with CAA - no accidents or tickets PLUS a $1500 surcharge if I don't install an engine immobilized to their spec.

That sounds bogus...I just got my Co-operators renewal this week...less than $900 with no conditions...$1,000 deductible.

Why would I BS about that? I suspected Co-operators used the ON Star reports purchased by some insurance reporting companies like Lexusnexus to check my braking and acceleration records but GM and Lexusnexus denied it was used in Canada.
