The Tariff Thread

There are a lot of flaws in Mr. Trump's plan on tariffs, but I'm certain he already knows this.
Allow me to offer my opinion on just a couple:

To begin with, he keeps talking about the enormous wealth created directly from the tariffs.
This assumes, of course, that the consumer keeps buying the product, even when the price has gone up by the increased amount.
Perhaps this holds true for those 'essentials', such as food and shelter, but I cannot believe it can be taken for granted across the board.
People affected by an increase in the cost of 'non-essentials', such as a new car, will simply cut back as finances permit.
The tariff monies will not be there because there simply isn't anyone willing or able to pay them.

Mr. Trump claims the vast monies poured into construction of new factories will get people working immediately.
There is already a shortage of skilled labour, so even if a corporation decided to build, it will be years, or decades, in the making.
Further, he claims the new factories will bring about a huge number of manufacturing jobs.
If one were building a new plant, the first thought would be to use robotics, and not be tied down to a high-priced labour pool.
These plants will not happen, or at least not in the form portrayed by the President.

One could go on and on indefinetely on this, but at the end of the day, I'm still optomistic that 'reasonable' solutions will be obtained.
Yes, abandoning the tariffs altogether would be a very healthy start, in my opinion (of course).

The way to stop Trump is to REMOVE all Canadian tariffs .
Sorry, never happen.
One thing to point out is why there are tariffs to begin with. They are to help level the playing field. Trades out = trades in. And buy local. As a nation. for certain products.
Trump would never agree to no tariffs. Especially of it didn't help his ego! The NAFTA deal was full of them as was USMCA agreement.

Human nature suggests that hostility is met with hostility ....
But what happens when you meet hostility with neutrality ... or ... ( God forbid ) kindness ... the other side doesnt know how to respond

And of course it wont happen because you have very stupid people on both sides .... it becomes a pissing contest .

If Canada went to zero tariffs ... I dont think it is a sign of weakness ... to me its a sign of sheer strength . And Corvettes would not increase in price for Canadians ..... ;) ... ?

Pure weakness is ford shooting off his pie hole about cutting US electricity .... yea thats all we need ... and get bombed by them shortly after .

Billionaire after billionaire in the US administration right now and one is more brain damaged than the next ... just look at how they came up with their tariff " numbers " .... from the way i understand it .... has nothing to do with other countries tariffs and has everything to do with trade deficits

What a mess ....

They are playing the public like a fiddle.

First sensible thing I’ve heard from that side of the border in quite some time. They need more like him down there. And we could do with a few like him on this side of the border as well. Thanks for posting this Mr Nut . Made my evening.
Agreed and coming from a deep south republican senator to boot ....

We are not talking about sane people here. Trump is literally insane. He's at best an egoist. There isn't a kind bone in his body.

Yet another rant;

For anyone that thinks that they are not directly affected by Mr. Trump's tariffs/cuts until they actually buy something, guess again.
If you hold RRSPs tied into the stock market (as a lot of portfolio managed ones are), you will be in for a shock with your next report.
Chances are that even if you are in a 'moderate risk' stock grouping, you are down at least 5% to 10% today of your total contributions.
To put it into perspective, you diligently saved for 20 years, only for Mr. Trump to say stupid s**t and wipe out a full years efforts.
This is the damage he has caused here, now, over the course of only a couple of days.
Left unchallenged, this guy will get what he really wants - World dominance by a few of the 'elite', paid for by the working class.
The tarrifs/cuts are but one set of tools for Mr. Trump to create the submissive society he needs for his journey.
The next big step (already in planning) will be massive tax breaks to propel the members of his 'elite' friends into unfathomable wealth.

That said, in my opinion (as always) fighting toot-for-tat with this guy through tariffs only surrenders oneself to his game.
He says something mean, so you say something even meaner.
He slaps you, so you slap him, harder.
He hits you, so you hit him back, harder.
This solves nothing, as the inevitable result is he picks up a stick, and he has access to the bigger stick!
Now what?

Alternatively, we (humanity) must argue the merits of abstaining from the present course, be it through direct discussion, or the courts.
This is the next logical step, and one that I see already developing in the courts in the U.S..
So far, I have only heard of these proceedings developing internally in the U.S., but the international campaigns will develop shortly.
Mr. Trump's biggest problem is that his own self projected ego failed to comprehend that others may have the audacity to disagree.
As his tariffs, and over-zealous cuts are proclaimed time after time as being not only immoral, but also illegal, his 'power' is lessened.
Quelled by his own ridiculousness, he will eventually be replaced by someone with reason, and hopefully compassion.
The sooner, the better.

If you consider that none of the Corvette models reach the CUSMA agreement requirement of 75% North American content, the Stingray is at only 70% so the tariff on the other 30% works out to $9K on a 120K car plus taxes. That's what the math says. What the gov't charges at the border is what we are waiting to hear as the Canadian counter response tariff went into effect today.

Bonds, they started a firesale on bonds. I'm waiting for the 3:46PM update.

Will seek stability in meme coin options.
The Dow was up 2962 at the close. Lots of investors lost a lot of money over the last several days but this market manipulation is also making a number of people an awful lot of money. Not hard to guess who a lot of them are. Meme coins….. heard of one called Dogecoin

It would be really interesting to know just how much Donald's buddies invested just before the tariffs were deferred.
You throw a $100,000,000.00 into the market in the morning and clear $5,000,000.00 before supper is on the table.
It's good work if you can get it.

You don’t actually think that they would make any trades if they had prior knowledge of the deferral do you ? Yeah , right . These swine have certainly affected the dreams of a lot of people over the past several days with their antics. Retired and nearly retired individuals in particular as a lot no doubt panic sold at not inconsiderable losses. These outsized moves in the markets usually get the SEC fired up . Should be interesting to see how vigorously they investigate trading related to the timing of all of the various announcements that have been made .

Donald and his crew invested in much just before he paused the tariffs! Guaranteed!!! That guy is ONLY in it for himself!! Now they made millions off innocent Americans.

Let the mudwrestling begin.

Hahahha... Lizzzz.... Famously the shortest serving PM in British history. 7 weeks, I have no skin in the game but I did follow this story.... The lettuce won.

I would take critique on fiscal policy from my 12 year old before I subscribe to her opinions.
