There are a lot of flaws in Mr. Trump's plan on tariffs, but I'm certain he already knows this.
Allow me to offer my opinion on just a couple:
To begin with, he keeps talking about the enormous wealth created directly from the tariffs.
This assumes, of course, that the consumer keeps buying the product, even when the price has gone up by the increased amount.
Perhaps this holds true for those 'essentials', such as food and shelter, but I cannot believe it can be taken for granted across the board.
People affected by an increase in the cost of 'non-essentials', such as a new car, will simply cut back as finances permit.
The tariff monies will not be there because there simply isn't anyone willing or able to pay them.
Mr. Trump claims the vast monies poured into construction of new factories will get people working immediately.
There is already a shortage of skilled labour, so even if a corporation decided to build, it will be years, or decades, in the making.
Further, he claims the new factories will bring about a huge number of manufacturing jobs.
If one were building a new plant, the first thought would be to use robotics, and not be tied down to a high-priced labour pool.
These plants will not happen, or at least not in the form portrayed by the President.
One could go on and on indefinetely on this, but at the end of the day, I'm still optomistic that 'reasonable' solutions will be obtained.
Yes, abandoning the tariffs altogether would be a very healthy start, in my opinion (of course).
