Washed the car for the first time today. Great Experience. Question. What did I do wrong that water accumulates under the back glass over the engine?

It is vented for engine cooling so hard to avoid really . Just try to avoid the vents with the hose or pressure washer . when done just open the hood and sop up the drips and wipe out accumulated dust at the same time . Good on ya , some people don't even wash themselves...

You can buy engine vent blocks/covers or buy some large beach towels to place over the engine when washing. Remember to remove them after washing the car. And for the lower vent I bought a piece of foam pipe insulation, split it in half and stuffed it in the slot.

I purchased a three piece plastic snap in place vent covers and a rubber bottom window piece to seal the window. Makes washing nice and easy no water in the engine boy.
