Here's my food for thought today.
I have never been a fan of the artificial intelligence advancements that have been made in the last number of years and even more so as AI has progressed of late. In my opinion ChatGBT or whatever it's called and @1stVette's best friend Perplexity, and likely way more programy things I'm not familiar with, are just one more step towards humans losing control. Once we lose the control over an AI that has the capacity to out think us and can make it's own decisions on what it thinks is best for mankind, then what next. Are Terminator/Matrix scenarios in the world's future? Scientists started worrying about climate change around the early 60's but it never really hit the news until the late 80's, and never really made any
in-your-face impact on anyone until the last few years. AI control might be a lot closer to a catastrophe than climate change.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not shitting my pants paranoid on either AI or climate change forecasts as I'm at an age where likely neither will affect me much (if I had children I might think differently). Just tossing it out there for comments on something other than politics...Now there's a change... lol...

As VetteBot says to new members daily, "If you are John Conner, I need to speak with you"
Hmmm…I would say that “ AI “ and related technologies are the most misunderstood things that people now hear about almost everyday. Especially with the huge advances in computational power largely due to NVIDIA GPU’s which are incredibly powerful compared to even just a couple of years ago. This combined with much more advanced Large Language Models which are advancing just as quickly as the hardware through the use of advanced Machine Learning algorithms has really changed the game so to speak.
The possibilities for major advancements in especially the field of medicine are just incredible. Developing new molecules for drug discovery in a fraction of the time that it has usually taken for example. It will save lives without question. The possibility of finding new treatments and even cures for cancer have never been greater. And that’s just one field. The possibilities are almost endless.
Of course like any technology the potential for misuse is also there but we won’t be being taken over by or wiped out by any products of AI technology anytime soon. Not to say that regulations and controls shouldn’t be developed, agreed upon by the major governments and companies and put in place as there always is the other side of the coin. Splitting the atom made large amounts of clean energy available and made medical imaging much more advanced but it also made the A- bomb possible.
Most people may not be aware but AI is far from new, the term was first coined in 1955 . Lol. As for my “ best friend “ Perplexity it’s simply a search engine much like any other. it doesn’t create any answers or content so to speak it just simply scrapes the web to find a variety of pertinent information related to your question.

Has anyone ever seen @1st Vette ? I am starting to thing he is an AI trying to take over the CCF.

And now for the younger generation

If you think you are smarter than the previous generation... 50 years ago the owners manual of a car showed you how to adjust the valves. Today it warns you not to drink the contents of the battery.

"A few million years ago, when human beings first evolved on Earth, it was already a middle-aged world, 4.6 billion years along from the catastrophes and impetuosities of its youth. But we humans now represent a new and perhaps decisive factor. Our intelligence and our technology have given us the power to affect the climate.
How will we use this power? Are we willing to tolerate ignorance and complacency in matters that affect the entire human family? Do we value short-term advantages above the welfare of the Earth? Or will we think on longer time scales, with concern for our children and our grandchildren, to understand and protect the complex life-support systems of our planet? The Earth is a tiny and fragile world. It needs to be cherished."
