I have been considering this type of thing since I bought my 77 ... I was young and foolish, didn't care that the previous owner had installed alpine speaker covers in the dash and cut up the centre console to house a cd player....
since then I've looked at plenty of posts on what folks have done and I've gotta say the custom autosound options 'look' good to me. they bear a hefty price tag, but they've been around for quite a few years now... I've never personally heard one.
I can say in areas of car stereo tech -- it has gone leaps and bounds from when I was a youngster.
When I get to the interior portion of my build I plan to do the following:
1:> buy a non-working, but buttons complete factory GM radio from the 1977 lineup chevrolet had out there -- gut it -- and install one of those pre-made units that wire up to the off/on/volume/tuner etc pots & lights on the old unit.
Something like these: ( ) & ( )
Some of these things have USB in, Bluetooth, phone charging ports, and a pre-amp -- with instructions on how to get the job done.
Then run that to a small form factor power amp, and a new design compact, powered subwoofer.
( )
Once that is up and running I can look at replacing the dash speakers / add door speakers if possible, and also the custom autosound rear bar, or speakers in the seatbacks or something more....
At the same time I also have a raw idea to make some kind of cushioned & secure rack system for storing the T-tops in the luggage area ... I seem to recall there is plenty of room for both tops, even with a pair of 6x9 boxes shoved all the way to the back ...
