power starter does not engaged

I put in a new shifter and everything was fine but when I tried to engage the starter it does not engage, am I missing something?

Guessing you have an automatic. There will be a neutral sensor somewhere down there that only lets the car start in neutral or park. If it worked before, I'd say you disturbed something when you installed the new shifter. Try it in neutral as well as park.
