My cars gas gauge gives me wrong readings once in a while. Like itll show half tank when you turn the ignition on, and then quart tank once you start the car. Or itll show low fuel and then the needle will start climbing and go to where it probably should be once you start driving. Is this caused by the same thing or something else is wrong?
its from the fuel you are using or the person before you , there are alot of aditives out there to help clean of the sensor . use fuel from esso premium as well works for me 5 years running

I've noticed that my fuel gauge is working fine most of the time, but once it's down to 1/8 on the gauge, the next day when I start up the car it will read empty and will say low fuel.
I also lose a bit of fuel on the gauge readings (about 1/16 or a tick on the gauge) between what the gauge reads when I get home from work, parking the car in the garage and the next morning when I start it up to drive to work. That seems a bit excessive as that implies theoretically if i just start the car 16-20 times i would run out of fuel!
My question is, I know it's not nearly as bad as some of the experiences other members have had with the fuel gauge here and I understand that this appears to be a common problem with C5 fuel gauges but is this a sign of worse to come or can I safely just ignore it? Will this techron stuff I keep reading about cure the issue?
PS. Since I've owned the car (1.5 months) I've been exclusively using Shell V-Power 91 octane, I'm not sure if that makes a difference but I don't really have any brand loyalty (I've tried Shell V-Power, Esso 91, Sunoco 94 and Petro 94, after they bought out Sunoco and don't really notice any difference between the products) so if another gas station works, I'm more than will to try.

The Techron my help , but in most cases its just a band aide that won't last long .
It makes no difference which gas you use .
The problem stems from the sulpher in the fuels , that corrode the contacts on the boards . The only way to truley fix the problem is to replace the drivers side sending unit with a new unit .
Thanks for your advice Manny! Just out of curiosity, so I know what I'm getting into when the time comes; how much would that run me?
So has there ever been any kind of a consensus that everyone agrees on where fuel is concerned ?

I've always used CTC fuel ..( for the coupons )
If there is a "better" fuel for Vettes, that's what I'll use . Only the best for my baby coupons or not !

I use Petro Can Ultra 94 because of the increased octane rating but damn, it's pricey.
I give mine a shot of that occasionally and yes it's pricey.
I drop in there occasionally to see if they're out of 91 -- If they are they give the 94 for the price of 91.

premium fuel from a station that sells alot of it. the fuel will be fresher due to the turnover rate and less likely to have condensation issues.

+1 ----- No stale gas. -- The Petro's I go to are always very busy.
Is this a problem with the C6 cars as well?
From what I've read here the mileage on my car is way better than reported for others. We drove to the States 2 months ago and at the 500 km mark that we had gone the fuel gauge read half full still.
Filled it up then and it took nearly $50 worth. And I know that the car would take close to $100 from empty. All the driving was done very easy on cruise control on the highway. When we got home it was down to that half mark again and the 500 km mark and took close to $50 to fill it up again. Out here gas is at least 10 to 15% more expensive than back east. Love the gas mileage on our 2002 Vette.I have no explanation for my mileage readings. but they are truly accurate recordings. Was using Chevron 92 and 94 octane, they all contain techron out here.

With our 2005, the DIC might say I am getting 26 mpg but if I take the gallons used versus miles driven it can be in the 34-35 mpg range when running straight highway. I definitely go a long way on a tank of gas.

I always use Esso when I can as we don't have Chevron here or anything above 91. I think what I may start doing is varying the fuel stations I go to that way the car gets a bit of each companies formulas that clean for this or that. That way I think I should have everything covered!
