LS7 Valve Issue - Fact or Folklore ?

For years, there were guys in reject at the end of the line shimming starter motors. Then finally a process engineer in the Oshawa truck plant took it upon himself to do a study to see what was going on. It turned out the the bolt holes in the block were all over the place. Back at the engine plants, they revised the tooling to stabilize the drilling operation. With the bolt holes in the right place every time, the shimming operation disappeared. There is no telling how long they would have kept on paying guys to shim starters in all the plants had this guy not shown some initiative. Sometimes things don't happen very quickly in big companies. Sort of like the government.

My z06 is 09. Motor is warranty crate built Sep 2013, after 30k. Intake guides were loose over exh side. New bronze guides and they tick much quieter.

Still pretty amazing that something out of spec could not be corrected over 7 years!!! If I do get a Z06, this upgrade will just have to factor into the cost....along with a cam, headers......and maybe a supercharger. :D
hmmmmm.... We gonna see that green license plate pull into Ponoka next year sporting a new ride Riley?....

I wish! But it's something that is now more of a dream than something I can actually do. You'll just all have to look at the same ol' pile of garbage that I've been bringing every year. :D

Hmmmmm.... I think I know a couple million people who wish they were lucky enough to call that "ol' pile of garbage" theirs .... :Cheers2:

Just looking to clarify, are you saying the 2013 warranty motor had issues after 30k and needed the guides done? Or that your original 09 motor guides failed at30k and it was replaced with a crate motor? Was the crate motor a factory GM motor replaced by GM dealership?

The original 09 motor dropped valve at 30k km. It got a replacement crate motor put in which built Sep 2013. After another 25k ish with 13 crate. I pull off the crate heads and intake guides were more loose than exhaust, had them re guide with bronze. Now valvetrain quieter after new guides and nearly 65k km and hope its fine now.

Yes. Dealershxt work, they over torque 1 of the spark plug thread too on brand new crate that I had to get it heli coil repair during guide replace And o2 wires rubbing headers.

We definitely take our chances with a lot of dealerships. As simple as a dealershit oil change can be, my dealer pulled mine out of the shop and parked it facing and on top of the curb in the lot. Luckily for me there had been a couple of asphalt lot overlays and there was 1/8 inch of clearance between paint and concrete. It wasn't nearly as lucky for them as they experienced what happens when a man who loves his Corvettes blows a nut on a service manager.

Reminds me of that time my car was out with ALL lug nuts hand tightened on one wheel. Gave me OCD for a good 5 years after.
Aside from the usual forgot to put drain plug back on, left wrenches in engine bay, overtorqued bolts etc etc.

Thanks for the reply.

Shoot I was hoping things were good by 13!! reason I asked is I am half thinking on a C6 Z06 while I ge tthings in order. The car I'm looking at had the motor replaced also. I was hoping the crate motor would not be subject to the valve issue : ( Dammit, no such luck it sounds like.
