In response to GM Canada (and Stellantis) failing to maintain certain production promises, our government has informed both companies that effective immediately they no longer will be eligible for relief on counter tariff duties for American built vehicles and auto parts that they import and sell in Canada. GM does have an annual 24% remissions quota so it will be interesting to see how they choose to use it. One thing is certain, having to potentially pay the full eligible duty on American built C8’s imported & sold here in Canada, these new duties will not be wholly absorbed by GM, the manufacture.

Name something that goes down in price........... ;)

a car...as soon as you drive off the lot with it.
True but one of the few . Perhaps I could have said new product sale prices . The only thing I can think of is consumer electronics products like an Oled TV for example. Much cheaper now than when first available. But the vast majority of products only go up .

I would still buy another.
Find another car this reliable and that performs like this car for the money and maybe I would change my mind.
No doubt . A good portion of the market would continue to make high end purchases as an increase would not impact them. . However it would be highly likely that the bottom say third of folks that buy these machines could not afford a 20-25% increase in MSRP. Taking that many buyers out of the mix would seriously impact demand . GM would then seriously look at a diminished production schedule while new deliveries arrive at exorbitantly high prices. Time to get the popcorn out!

The meeting is in Markham on Monday. The Ingersoll plant closure and relocation to Illinois probably has our government wanting to be reimbursed
for all of the money that they gave to GM for job creation. The Equinox that was made there before is now made in Mexico.

Like there's a chance that will ever happen.... Stellantis would be on the hook for a settlement as well...
Another Tariff (Tax) on each car coming into Canada will quickly pay the government back, but the entire auto industry is about to crash with multiple plant closures already due to parts supply issues.

I feel more for the thousands of Ontario workers lining up at the unemployment office....

As they well should be. Our Government has been far too quick to pull out the check book . The majority of the 50 Billion given to multi billion dollar companies since 2020 for projects like battery plants has come from the Feds with some from the Ontario and Quebec governments . How's that working out ?
