1979 vette drives great but when hot, if I turn off engine it fails to restarv and tick over, just dies. Needs to rest for a couple of hours

Hi. I'm not sure if you mean it doesn't turn over or it turns over and doesn't fire up. Either way heat could be a problem. The starter could be hot and nor engaging ,they do sell heat shield "blankets" so it is a some what common problem. Or if it doesn't fire it could be the gas has sat, no flow of gas from a running motor, gotten hot from the engine and has created a vapour lock. Just two possibilities. Best of luck.

It fires up but then cuts out as soon as you put it in gear when hot.

That could be starter heat soak.
My car does the same sometimes. You can get a mini starter or wrap your
starter with a heat shield.
