Ever wonder why th eprice of gas does not, in some way, follow the price of crude. Remember when they were almost giving crude awaay a few years ago.
The answer is quite simple. The provinces count on the tax revenue to fund their largess.
That was confirmed this past week when our CAQ premier said they were thinking about eliminating the floor on gas prices.
Not all the Fed's fault, the provinces have their hand in your pocket too.
 
Who doesn’t have their hand in your pocket or their hand out these days. Just witness the price increases happening with goods that have absolutely nothing to do with tariffs. It’s a replay of the Covid gouging that was happening. As far as fuel goes a lot of it has to do with futures contracts, time of year, refinery maintenance among other things but as usual they are all great excuses to keep fornicating us . Swine .

Actually it's the Battle River - Crowfoot riding in Alberta. Battleford is in Saskatchewan. And since he was born and raised in Calgary, I doubt they will consider him an "Easterner" and chances are high that they won't invent 90 nobodies to run against him to try and split the vote. We need another federal voice in parliament anyway as the Easterners only give 2 shits about the west when it's time for their equalization transfers. JMO

Ooooo! I need to start a thread on why a carbon tax is actually a good thing! That won't be a controversial topic at all...

Also, for those people that keep posting how Canada contributes such a small amount of CO2. Look at it per capita. We're the 13th highest in the world, higher than all but the oil monarchies and Australia. Canada, 14.99 tons per person, China is 8.89 tons per person. The issue is that because of China's population, their emissions have increase almost 450% since 1990 as they modernize. China produces 32% of global renewable electricity, followed by the U.S. (11%), Brazil (7%), Canada (4.7%), and India (4.3%). So population is by far the largest factor, but pointing a finger at countries like China and the U.S. isn't totally fair.

Another interesting fact, most of Canada is powered by renewable sources of electricity. 60% by hydro, followed by nuclear (14%), natural gas (12%), and wind (6%). Only Alberta, Saskatchewan, Nova Scotia, and Nunavut generate the majority of power from fossil fuels. If you're in B.C., Quebec, or Ontario, then you're likely using 100% renewable power.

You got the first part right at least … ;) it’s rather disingenuous to use a “ per capita “ statistic given that there are approximately 39 million people in Canada and approximately 8.2 BILLION people on the planet . If you look at total Canadian emissions relative to global you’re looking at a rounding error essentially. If Canada ceased all fossil fuel emissions tomorrow the resulting difference in total global emissions would be next to impossible to calculate.
As of 2025, the world population is approximately 8.2 billion people. It is projected to continue growing, reaching around 10.3 billion by the 2080s before potentially declining thereafter





In 2021, Canada accounted for about 1.4% of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, ranking as the 12th largest emitter worldwide. Canada’s share of global emissions declined from 1.76% in 2005 to 1.40% in 2021. Other sources estimate Canada’s share at around 1.45% to 1.5% of global CO2 emissions. Despite its relatively small share, Canada has one of the highest per capita emissions rates among major emitters, with about 17.7 tonnes of CO2 .
 
Absolutely. Let's imagine it as a crime statistic though. Would you be happy if we replaced emissions with murder rate? "Hey! We're basically a rounding error when it comes to murders, but on a per capita basis, we're only the 12th highest globally! It's all good. No worries here."

Of course, two totally separate markers and a ridiculous comparison, but it's about how each of us impacts the world.
 
One other point,

That's true when we compare our relative share of emissions, mainly because so many developing countries are dealing with huge increases. The issue is that Canadian emissions increased by about 30% since 1990. So while our relative share decreased because of increases in China and India due to population gains, we increased our emissions over time.
 
I'm in a funny situation. I'm a geologist and I still support mining and oil and gas. We need plastics after all. I've also done a lot of sustainability work. I love cars. I love drag racing and muscle cars. I get why people are sensitive when you touch fuel prices. I also support the carbon tax and I want to leave a habitable planet to my kids.

I'm always happy to discuss the topic, but I also understand why it's a loaded issue.

Consider the source. Guess who the largest polluters in Canada are? @1st Vette's home NWT and Alberta. So you know who will be your biggest competitors in the climate change argument! ;)
