Does anyone else prefer the look of the narrow body Stingray vs the wide body GS/Z06?

As you say Mike "happy wife, happy life". I know it is a burden but if she is insisting on you getting your "own" Corvette, well I think you should put your own needs aside and make her happy.

What are you waiting for man?:WillyNilly:

It's in the works!

The biggest problem is garage space! So deciding where to move to so I can have a separate garage for toys and space to work on them.

I'm here at Gateway Chev. And there's a new GS just heading in for delivery prep. Nice looking car. Scary thing though, they parked it overnight up in front of the showroom. Tech came to drive it into shop, as he's backing it to the ramp I had to urgently stop him, he was about to drive over the edge which was a 10 inch drop. Someone would have been very upset having damage before delivery. But crisis averted.

Yikes! Glad it is not mine, hope mine is currently going through the line at Bowling Green.

I went stingray with Z51 package and a few other options ie magnitec ride. Performance exhaust 3LT. and convertible are some of them. Wide body didn't do it for me. Your voice your ride.

After 2 production delays (M7 transmission & red calipers) finally took delivery of my M7 Grand Sport late last week. Love it and planning on a nice road trip in a couple of weeks.View attachment 6433 View attachment 6434
Damn that looks good David. You won't be able to hide that big smile for a long, long time.... Congrats and enjoy.

Well, I think I've solved it.

Turns out I don't like the narrow body look more than the widebody. Such a simple thing, really, but it actually took me putting my thoughts down in this thread to figure it all out.

I made a more recent thread over on Stingrayetc, about my inability to choose much else, and I'm not going to repost it here, as I think it rapidly helped me figure out that dilemma as well. Model, colour, interior trim and bits have all been sorted. Now I just have to place my order. I'm hoping to order a MY18 this summer, but I'm willing to wait an extra year if I have to. I just want to make sure I get my exterior colour.

Question 1: do you guys know when you can traditionally first put in an order for the next model year vette (other than just put down your name and deposit to "get on the list")?

Question 2: has anyone been able to confirm that GS orders can fill a dealer's existing Z51 slot, or is it a more special/harder to place order, a la Z06?

Thank you!

The question is not so much when you can place the order but when GM will accept it into their system and it moves into the production schedule. I placed my order for my new GS in May well before prices were even available. GM did not accept the order into their system until late July.

You can change an order from Z51 to GS up until the time GM accepts the order and the order status code changes to 3400.

Usually you can start ordering the next model year in the last week of May. The production usually changes over at the end of June / start of July. Last year thought the Z06 ordering didn't open up until late July, with expected manufacturing to start in September.

I love the looks of the widebody cars (c6 & c7), but I'm not fond of the Z07 front splitter and the side skirts that look more like running boards. I really love the fender bulges and the rear brake ducts are a huge addition to the aggressive looks. In the end though, I chose a Z51 (because there was no Grand Sport in 2006), and am still debating the idea of changing out the fenders in the rear for widebody ones. It may come as a surprise to some who know me, but I struggle with the purism of putting widebody fenders on a car that wasn't supposed to have them, but it is easy to do.

I'm a "bang-for-the-buck" kinda guy though, so I'm a big fan of the Grand Sport. I love the better suspension and brakes, and making more power is easy and relatively cheap. I would undoubtedly choose a Grand Sport and take some of the money I save over a Z06 and put it into engine mods to make up the difference in power.

In the end, it's all about making your car your own, and the Corvette lineup offers you whatever you need, and the aftermarket makes up the difference for whatever you want. All with the reliability and dependability that we love about the mighty General.

I'm not trying to start a flame war. Just hear me out. I know I have to decide this for myself, but I find it helpful to get my thoughts out of my head and listen to feedback. I've also posted this on stingrayforums.com and will likely put it on my blog (just my initial post) sometime as well.

I now know (after the latest test drive) I must have MSRC in my Z51 equipped C7. Unofficially, Canadian GS prices start about 3700 over a similarly equipped Z51/MRSC. It's certainly within realm of doable. Cost is not the issue. Though I would certainly not be getting the Z07 package were I to choose the GS, because....

I don't go to the track. I get my jollies on lovely narrow mountain roads at my disposable all over this province (near and far away). I certainly don't "need" the increased limits of the GS... it's plenty easy enough to get into trouble/kill myself/harm others if I was trying to push even a base Stingray on these mountains. It would also be cheaper in the long run with replacing the smaller brakes and narrower tire's of the Stingray vs the GS. Again, cost not the issue, but it's worth mentioning.

It's also worth mentioning the thought of driving the wide body car with its 285s up front and 335s in the rear in even light rain (yes, Virginia, some of us drive our sports cars in the wet), and likelihood of losing grip all too easily. Remember, I'm on Vancouver Island. It rains a lot here. At least I have the luxury of driving my cars (virtually) year round.

So, "practically" speaking (can you believe anyone attempting to argue logic when choosing a 460hp, RWD, 2 seater?!), the Z51 makes more sense. Cheaper to buy, cheaper to maintain, virtually no dynamic penalties for my driving needs, and possibly even a bit more usable as a daily driver given the tires.

BUT.... I'd be willing (like most of you, I'd imagine), to forego any considerations for rationality and worship at the temple of LUST. That's why we buy these things and not Chevy Cruzes, right?

Except.... my eyes can't seem to reconcile (what I consider to be) the visual hodgepodge that is the C7 wide body GS or Z06. To my eyes, the front fender flare additions look like cheap add-ons, and I dislike the way the rear flares' roundedness seems to clash when added to the foundation of the Stingray's sharp creases. I do much prefer the grille and side skirts on the wide bodied cars, but that's an easy thing to import into a narrow body C7.

I'm not asking for people to say "YEAH, you go girl!" (er, I'm a guy), or "EFF YOU, anyone who doesn't like flares is un-American!" (which we all are on this site, obviously). I'm just trying to see if anyone else is perhaps in the same shoes as me: looking at getting a Corvette, can afford a model above a Z51 (though I admit a Z06 is outside my own budget) optioned just the way they want, but steps back and goes..... I dunno.

[side note: I have practiced this behaviour before. I chose a Boxster GTS over the Spyder last year because 1) the long gearing of all Porsches makes even 330 hp in a 3000 lb roadster too easy to go ballistic in, I certainly don't feel like the car needs the additional 45 hp of the Spyder, and 2) I MUCH preferred the beautiful lines of the standard Boxsters over the double hump of the Spyder. I appear to be in the minority there, but it's true]

For fairness, I think the wide body look is best suited to darker cars/metallics, and they HAVE to be lowered. The wheel gap is comically truck-like. If I went GS, it would be Black Rose, or (against my own argument) Arctic White. Why? Because I think the narrow body also looks best in Arctic White. Especially like this:

*swoon*

Ok, you may now commence telling me I'm crazy. Thanks for listening, everyone.
as an owner of a Z06 and have several friends who have the non wide body I prefer the look of the wide body. Why you would suspect that the car would become slippery with the stock tires and not change them out to a non run flat tire after driving the car if that is the case escapes me. Your opinion of the hodgepodge look of the Z06 was not meant to be inflammatory but cmon now............ Colour choice is the most important factor in choosing body style, I have a Race Night Blue version and to me it looks great. My reply to people who criticize such a fantastic model year in both versions is " You have an opinion, and I have a Z06"

I think you should read my post higher up on this page. :) Like I said, I just needed to put my thoughts to paper, er... computer screen, to figure it out.

FYI, I wasn't concerned re: the GS/Z06 stock tire quality or tread, but rather the width. Great for traction in the dry, but they'll have the opposite effect in the wet. I live on Vancouver Island, after all!

Spectre why come on the Corvette site and have anything negative to say about the overall design of the Z06? I bought the car because there wasn't anything more that you could want in the C7. I love my car and as far as I am concerned, what other people own or preference is 100% ok with me. What struck a nerve is that you came out and criticized the car and ultimately my choice of vehicle. Go out and buy whatever model you want, it seems you have a strong opinion of what you don't want. As this is my sixth corvette I have the opinion that this is my best experience to date with an American classic.
