That's what I thought too. Far cry from the CT114 jet my brother in law got me in to sit in one. He wouldn't let me take for a burn though....
Apparently they are pretty capable but just not the same. Be interesting to know how much input the Airforce had in this decision or if it was just some pencil pushing bureaucrats.
Guessing they are cheaper than a new jet powered. I know the CT114 was less than half a million but that was in the 1960's. A single engine turboprop today would be over a million and a jet powered would be a lot more than that. That being said, the ST157 turboprop is damn near as fast as the snowbird.
I would think fuel would be a lot cheaper too.
They use the same fuel. Jet-A. Turbojet VS turboprop, but both are gas turbines. Now, if you're saying one will use less of that fuel, that is quite likely as the way newer ST157 is slower and probably more efficient.
