I am writing on to report on the experience of a Chevrolet Corvette owner who is enduring what appears to be a significant service and support issue involving a 2006 Corvette and the programming of an original equipment (OEM) replacement key fob.

For context, I have worked with Corvettes for many years and have personally programmed numerous C5 and C6 key fobs. I have 51 years of Corvette sales and service experience and have sold more than 1,000 used Corvettes in the last 13 years. My team and I understand the programming procedures used on these vehicles and are aware that there are important differences between Canadian-specification and U.S.-specification Corvettes.

On U.S.-specification Corvettes, key fob programming can be performed by the owner. The procedures are published in the owner's manual and are widely documented. Canadian-specification Corvettes, however, require dealer intervention and access to GM systems to complete the programming process.

The vehicle in question is a 2006 Corvette with one functioning key fob. The owner purchased a new OEM replacement fob intended for the vehicle and sought assistance from a GM dealership to program it.

The first dealership, Ontario Motor Sales in Oshawa, charged approximately $150 plus tax and attempted to program the new fob. The dealership advised the customer that the existing fob was incorrect and should not function, despite the fact that it did. They further advised that the newly purchased OEM replacement fob was also incorrect and recommended purchasing another fob at a cost of approximately $350, despite the replacement appearing to correspond to a later-model Corvette.

Concerned by this advice, the customer contacted me. I suggested seeking assistance from another Chevrolet dealership with Corvette experience.

I then contacted Roy Nichols Chevrolet in Courtice and spoke with a service advisor, Jackie, to confirm that the dealership had both the equipment and expertise necessary to program a 2006 Corvette key fob. I was assured that they could assist.

The customer attended the appointment, but the dealership was also unable to complete the programming. During the visit, the technician explained that the vehicle was receiving signals from the existing fob and that the original fob appeared functional. However, they were unable to add the second fob.

The technician acknowledged awareness of the secondary key-fob relearn procedure. As I understand it, the Corvette platform utilizes two programming methods:

  1. A 15-minute procedure used when adding an additional fob while a functioning fob is already present.
  2. A more comprehensive relearn procedure that erases all stored fobs from memory and then reprograms every fob to the vehicle. This process typically requires approximately 30 minutes and may occasionally need to be repeated.
The technician advised the customer that performing the full relearn procedure could potentially "brick" the vehicle if unsuccessful, leaving the customer with no working fobs and a Corvette paperweight. Understandably concerned, the customer declined authorization to proceed.

As a result, the customer left with the same single functioning fob he arrived with.

To date, the customer has:

• Purchased a new OEM replacement key fob.
• Visited two GM dealerships.
• Paid diagnostic and programming charges.
• Made multiple trips to and from dealerships.
• Spent approximately $400 with no successful outcome and no additional functioning key fob.

My concern extends beyond this individual case.

If GM dealerships are unable or unwilling to complete the documented relearn procedure on a 2006 Corvette, Canadian owners may effectively be left with no practical solution when they need additional key fobs. If the last remaining fob is lost, damaged, or becomes inoperative, the vehicle could become unusable despite otherwise being fully functional.

I have attempted to contact both dealerships directly to discuss the relearn process and share information regarding the procedures commonly used within the Corvette community. I have since spoken to representatives of both and I am awaiting their feedback.

I have requested clarification from GM Canada on the following points:

  1. Is there any GM policy, software update, or technical bulletin that prevents programming a new OEM key fob to a 2005-2007 Corvette?
  2. Is the complete key-fob relearn procedure still approved by GM for these vehicles?
  3. Are GM technicians currently trained and authorized to perform the full relearn procedure when the standard add-fob procedure fails?
  4. Has GM discontinued support for the original key-fob system used on early C6 Corvettes?
  5. If support remains available, can GM Canada direct this customer to a dealership with the required expertise and equipment to successfully complete the programming?
  6. If support is no longer available, what is GM Canada's recommended solution for owners of these vehicles?
The Corvette is an iconic GM product with a loyal owner community.



Owners reasonably expect that basic vehicle access systems such as key fobs will remain serviceable throughout the life of the vehicle. We have contacted GM Canada and the two dealerships involved and will report back our experience in resolving this matter and clarifying the company's position regarding continued support for these vehicles.

Makes a good argument for using AirTags or Android tracker tags . Cheap and effective. Makes one long for the days of a physical key you can make copies of for 2 bucks . Best pray , if you own a newer model that nothing goes seriously wrong 10 years down the road with the electronics and manufactures say sorry we no longer support that model. Anyone with an older Apple product already knows this .

My first reaction is that both these dealerships are complete morons who should be avoided at all cost. And file a complaint with GM.

Secondly, is it normal in Ontario for a dealership to charge for work not done??? And why did the customer even pay those garbage invoices? Again, I'd file a complaint with GM.

As you mentioned in your post, the short and long FOB programming methods in the manual and on-line only work for US spec cars. In Canada, you have to use a GM Tech2 with CANDI interface to get into the BCM programming.

Once in, any of the 4 FOB slots can be individually added, deleted, or changed in a matter of minutes.

As for the FOB differences, 2005-2007 (fatter, no integrated key) and 2008-2013 (thinner, with integrated key) are functionally & electronically the same. There is no difference between them or with how the car sees them for programming. Either of these FOBs will work with any C6.

I hope you track down a dealership that knows how to use their Tech2 (hardware device or software emulator) and doesn't rip people off charging for work never done.

I bought it from him last year. When/if I program a new remote key fob, do I use the US method or Canadian method (dealership) to do it?

Wild guess but since it's a US car, I would think it would be US programming. Can't hurt to try it as if so, you won't need dealer intervention. And welcome to the forum. :canada:
 
US cars have 200 mile per hour speedos, Canadian have 300 kmh on the speedo. So, US cars are programable with 1 active fob. Canadian require tech 2 or better.

We now have 4 Chevrolet dealers who can not program 2005-2007 C6 Corvettes at a cost of $200.00 each. "yes, we can do that"... became, "no, we don't work on older Corvettes". They tried to charge double that. We are told that GM has deleted the software. GM customer service says, "see the dealer". Dealer says, we might "brick your car". GM Customer Service and Dealer say, "We don't know if you will ever be able to start the car, again. We don't have a fix. At your cost and risk" Corvette C6 meet iPhone 6! The parts we can work around, the software is copyright and deleted. We are working on it. Anybody got any clues?

Wow doesn't begin to do that situation justice. Just think about 5 or 6 years after production of the C8 ends and there is an issue with the electronic systems, which means practically every system in the vehicle. Quite disconcerting.

This is a shot in the dark but I lost a remote key fob for my Lincoln, bought one off amazon and had a locksmith here program it. Not many here have the technology but this guy just plugged into the ECM with his unit. Took him a half hour and charged me $150. Works fine.

A recent customer purchased a beautiful Canadian-specification 2006 Corvette. He wanted nothing more than a second OEM key fob programmed for peace of mind.
After visits to two authorized GM dealerships, approximately $400 in diagnostic and programming charges, and a case with GM Canada Customer Care, he still does not have a working second key fob.
What surprised me most wasn't that the programming failed.
It was GM's response.
GM advised that the next step is to erase the only working key and attempt to program two new replacement fobs ($800 plus labour and tax) but could not guarantee the procedure would succeed or provide any success-rate information.
That leaves owners facing an uncomfortable question:
Would you authorize a procedure that could leave your only functioning key erased without any assurance your vehicle will start afterward?
As someone who has spent over 50 years in the Corvette business, I find the broader issue more important than this individual case.
Modern vehicles increasingly depend on software rather than mechanical parts. When support for that software becomes uncertain, what are the long-term implications for owners of otherwise excellent vehicles?
I'm not writing this to criticize GM or the dealerships involved. Everyone I've dealt with has been professional.
I'm writing because I believe this is an important discussion for Corvette owners and the automotive industry.
If you're a GM technician, dealership service manager, or owner of a 2005–2007 Corvette, I'd appreciate hearing your experience.
Have you successfully programmed replacement OEM key fobs on these cars recently?

That is the instruction for US spec Corvettes. Not applicable to Canadian cars. This is a Canadian spec car issue for 2005 to 2007 only, at this time.

For Canadian‑spec 2005–2007 C6 Corvettes, the fob electronics are the same as U.S. cars, but the owner‑program “short procedure” is disabled on export/Canadian models. You can still add a spare, but you’ll need either:
a dealer (or GM‑capable locksmith) with a scan tool, or
a workaround that owners have used: program a second fob via the long procedure, then use the short procedure to add a third. �

Bring the car and proof of ownership to:
A Chevrolet dealer, or
