Hi everyone-I am going refinish the inner areas of my 76-79 aluminum alloy wheels. The inner area (where the holes are for the lug nuts) is black. Can someone tell me if the original black finish should be a matte or glossy black? Somebody previously repainted the inner wheels with a gloss black, Not sure if that is correct. Thanks.

Hi! Richard Prince’s Restoration Guide (one of my favorite books) states that for the 1978–79 model years, the center sections were painted semi-gloss black. There is no mention of this detail for the 1976–77 models. An exception in 1978 is the Pace Car replica, which did not have black-painted center areas.

Welcome to the forum. I can't help, but I'm curious why you care about something you won't see. Or are you referring to the entire inside of the wheel?
Richard Prince is known for his work on Corvette restoration guides. His notable book is the Corvette Restoration Guide, 1968-1982, which is available in a second edition. This guide provides comprehensive information for restoring third-generation Corvettes (C3 models) to their original factory specifications. The second edition is a one-source reference covering every part and sub-assembly necessary for a factory-original restoration.

The NCRS Judging Guide only states that the center section is painted black. So, we believe Richard that they were painted semi-gloss black. :)
As @Murray20c8 said welcome to the club ! Here is some info you might find interesting and perhaps even useful , lol . Tap anywhere.

Hi- I mean the inner section where the lug nut holes and plastic center caps are.
