Rusty rotors

Recently had new brakes done on my 2003 Anniversary Corvette. The rotors don’t have 500 miles on them and they are very rusty

First not sure of the quality of the rotors that were put on, some do rust very quickly. I find with my 03 (stock rotors) that if I wash the car and then park it for any length of time the rotors will indeed be covered with surface rust. This time of the year is bad with the amount of moisture in the air and constantly changing temperatures, it will show up even on a stored car. You may even find that the callipers will stick a bit when you first move the car. You will hear them "pop" when they release.

This is pretty normal with these cars. I just drag the brake a little bit and the friction from the pads clears the surface rust off quickly. Don't think you have anything to worry about, it is just a cosmetic thing.

I am sure it is cosmetic. The rotors were inexpensive so I’m sure the quality is not the best. Don’t drive it much maybe 2000 miles per year. Most of the rust is on the hat.

If surface rust is annoying you can get the hats painted.

Interesting that the hats would be rusting so quickly. However, mine started rusting around a year after I pulled my car out of the southern states.
If you do decide to paint the hats, don’t forget to use a high temp paint.

I went with galvanized coated rotors. 2 years now and zero rust.

Someone mentioned that there are covers for the hats. Anyone know where to purchase them

Low quality steel and cast iron rust quickly. Buy cheap bolts and they are terrible, especially if exposed to salt. Our 2005 has the original brakes, and, looking between the spokes of the wheels, things still look good after all these years. The car is always kept inside, never sees salt and has about 80k km on it. You can now buy rotors with a coating to keep the bare surfaces from rusting. Don't know much about them. I have gas heat in my garage. I fire the furnace up for the mild days like we had last week when it was in the 40s F and 50s F. That's when the air is full of moisture and causes rust. Down around zero F. not much rusting happens.
