As far as I know you need an OBD1 reader. Up to 94 the plug was different from OBD2. 95 was the changeover year.
TBH, I never even knew you could buy a cable to allow for an OBD2 reader to connect to an OBD1. It will be interesting to find out how well it works. I would guess that if anything would be fried, it will be the reader but it would be better to be certain.I know but I bought on eBay a conversion cable that connects to the car and the other end plugs into my OBD2 code reader.
