mesh screen under front wheel well

While front wheel was jacked up using my trusty/rusty Motomaster, I noticed this,
I would guess its a screen to protect stones, mud , dead skunks , ice/snow etc. from hitting the rad fan. What bothered me was it got dirty but fortunately not plugged The residue there was from driving through the rain. Another area to clean.

It's to allow air flow through the rad.
