"Breadloaf"? Its a high tech impact resistor. We tried it out a friend of my smashed his forehead on it and he is still good.

The Bread-Box is there because when GM was designing the C4 congress was trying to pass legislation to require all cars to be equipped with airbags. The "breadbox" was designed to hold an airbag, but Regan vetoed the bill and GM never bothered to re-design.
Your replacement glove box was an after market piece that many of the C4's got. They are no longer available. I have seen some home made things, but in my opinion, yours is the one that looks best.
Being a true purist; I kind of like the Bread Box.....and it will stay in my car.
