I'm new to this forum and I'm hoping someone can help me diagnose a gauge cluster problem. I have a 1985 Corvette that is in great shape except for a frustrating gauge cluster issue. It started with the voltmeter showing a discharge condition even though the charging system was working fine. Shortly after, all the gauges started flashing, and then the entire unit went dead. So I bought a rebuilt cluster. After installing it and starting the engine every single LED in the unit lit up except the tach, but not one gauge worked. After about 5 minutes the unit went black. The unit was on warranty so I sent it back. They e-mailed me a video showing my gauges being tested, they worked fine. After receiving a new rebuilt unit, the same thing happened again. Only this time all the LED's lit up for about 15 seconds, then the unit went black. Have any of you experienced this problem? I would greatly appreciate any help in diagnosing this issue. Thanks.

Not that I know a lot on the 85 Steve but anything I've come across remotely similar with electrical nearly always leads me back to a ground problem. I did a bit of gaggling or googling.... and ground appears to be a good place to start.... here's a lead from an old post if yourinterested and haven't already covered these bases... Hope you get it figured out. Nothing more frustrating ...

The other possibility is a bad ground....somewhere. The harness has grounds in several places. Rear of driver side cyl-head, trans bellhousing, engine block behind oil filter...and others along the frame as needed. All dash power originates from a single post behind the battery where fusable links protect base power supply. Those are good for corroding being near the battery with the corrosive fumes or spillage around the battery.

I have been away from this site due to some internet service problems, so may be a bit late in this talk.
I have an 88, and have had problems with my star wars type cluster also. Nothing as bad as you, but still. In my case I am just living without the oil pressure gauge. Installed an mechanical one instead.
Not sure if you know about this site and Mr. Batee. From what I understand he is the guy to talk to about this situation...... From the sounds of yours, I would think your power supply is toast....... and I am sure you have some bad grounds also........ but that is just me guessing. Have a look at Batees page. Lots of information and you could always drop him an email......... good luck..
