My 2015 Z06/Z07 M7 has 12,000 happy km. I have not taken it to a track because of the reports of overheating. Since the 2017 Grand Sport appears to be a Z06/Z07 without the supercharger and related (3530-3455=75 lb), instead of buying a GS for track use would I be as well off just short shifting the Z06?

From my knowledge the worst offenders of the Z06's that overheat are A8's. Less chance of that happening with the M7. Also, not all Z06's overheat at the track so I would suggest getting out to the track and enjoying your car. Watch the temp gauge and if it his a certain temp, such as 240F for the coolant and 290F for the oil (According to Car and Driver, others think the max temps are higher), then slow a bit or try short shifting and see if that works.
If it does get to hot for your liking, you can look at what GM is doing to improve the cooling on the 2017 Z06's or as stated, get a Grand Sport and enjoy that car out at the track.

If anyone's heard differently about the overheating issues or max temps, please post up! I only claim to be 90% accurate, 10% of the time.

Either way you go, it's a win-win from what I see as you get to drive some sweet cars! :D

I believe Tadge has come out and said the changes to the 2017 Z06 will be able to be retrofitted on the earlier year cars, so maybe that's the easiest route to go? No idea what the cost will be, however.

Before sinking more money down the hole you should certainly take it to the track and find your limits. From what I've gleaned on the topic the Z's overheat at the limit and you'd need to be driving one at the limit for a while to throw it in limp mode. Have a track day and see what comes of it. Then decide. The Z is a whole lot of car to drive at the limit for any length of time.

Before replacing a Z06\Z07with a GS\Z07 the question to be asked. Will I miss the power?
What do I really want to do with the car.
Being fortunate enough to have had a 2015 Stingray Convert. which was sold in June this year for a 2017 GS now with 600k on it as well as a 2016 Z06 since Apr 29th, there is a lot to consider.

You cant replace the feel of acceleration and sound of the 650HP\Torque power plant or the tight suspension of a track ready car.
On the other hand the 460HP sounds great and moves out fast enough to get the grin happenin big time.
The ride of the Z06 even in Touring mode reminds you that your in a race car. Add the Competition seats and long trips take some getting used to.
However in your case with both Z06 or GS with Z07 option the ride doesn't appear to be a concern.

I found the GS with GT seats to be the perfect fit between Z06 and Stingray. And when I really want to feel the Giddy Up, take the Z for a rip.
