Gauge goes back to 0. new radiator. Everything else is fine.

Hi, I have a 1974 L48. The heat gauge always goes to a hair below the red and stays there. Car doesn't overheat. What is the normal operating temperature the gauge should show? Does anyone know why the needle goes so high? Thanks, Gary
